How Much RAM Do You Need for GTA 5?

GTA 5 needs 4GB of RAM at minimum and 8GB recommended on the Legacy PC edition, based on Rockstar's published requirements. The newer 2025 PC edition lists 8GB as the minimum and 16GB in a dual-channel setup as the recommendation. For GTA Online with a browser and Discord open, 16GB is the practical target. For FiveM roleplay servers and heavy graphics mods, 32GB gives comfortable room. Official details are on Rockstar Games Support.

Is 8GB of RAM Enough for GTA 5?

It is enough to play the Legacy edition, but it leaves little room. Windows 11 alone uses several gigabytes at idle, and a browser with a few tabs can use 2GB or more. On 8GB you may see stutter when driving fast through the city or when textures stream in. Closing background apps helps, as covered in how to reduce RAM usage.

Is 16GB of RAM Enough for GTA 5?

Yes. 16GB meets Rockstar's recommendation for the newer edition and gives the Legacy edition plenty of space. Our page on whether GTA 5 can run on 16GB RAM covers this in more detail.

Why Dual-Channel Memory Matters

Rockstar's recommendation specifies a dual-channel configuration. That means two memory sticks, such as 2 x 8GB, running together for more memory bandwidth. GTA 5 depends heavily on the CPU, so bandwidth matters. Two matched 8GB sticks will usually perform better than one 16GB stick.

RAM Is Not the Only Limit

  • Graphics memory (VRAM): Textures load into VRAM first. Too little VRAM causes stutter that extra RAM will not fix.
  • CPU: GTA 5 is CPU-heavy in busy areas and in GTA Online.
  • Storage: The game needs around 100GB of free space, and an SSD reduces loading time and texture pop-in.

Signs Your System Needs More RAM for GTA 5

  • Stutter that appears after the game has been running for a while
  • Textures that load late when you move quickly
  • Task Manager showing memory use near 100 percent while playing
  • Crashes or out-of-memory errors after adding mods

How to Check How Much RAM You Have

On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open the Performance tab, and select Memory. The panel shows total RAM, speed and the number of slots in use.

How to Lower GTA 5 Memory Use

  • Close browsers and launchers before you start.
  • Set texture quality to Normal or High instead of Very High.
  • Reduce population density and distance scaling.
  • Remove mods you do not use.
