Is DDR6 RAM Coming? Release Date and Expected Speeds

Yes, but it is not available yet. As of late 2026, the DDR6 specification is still not finalized. Server and data center DDR6 is expected no earlier than 2027, and consumer desktop platforms are expected around 2028 to 2029. DDR5 remains the memory for current PCs.

DDR6 Release Date

  • Now: Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are developing and testing DDR6. JEDEC has published the mobile version, LPDDR6 (July 2025), but not the desktop and server standard.
  • 2027: TrendForce did not expect DDR6 modules or compatible processors before this year. Enterprise and data center products are expected first.
  • 2028 to 2029: consumer desktop platforms with DDR6 support are expected.

These dates are targets, not shipping schedules.

Expected DDR6 Speeds

GenerationIntroducedJEDEC speed range
DDR420141,600 to 3,200 MT/s
DDR5Late 20214,800 to 8,800 MT/s
DDR62027 at the earliestExpected 8,800 to 17,600 MT/s

These speeds come from pre-ratification disclosures and may change. Reports also expect DDR6 to use a new channel design and, on desktops, the CAMM2 form factor, but those details are not confirmed.

Should You Wait for DDR6?

No. DDR6 is at least a few years away for consumers, and it will need new motherboards and CPUs. Buy the memory your current platform supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will DDR6 be released?
Not before 2027 for servers. Consumer systems are expected around 2028 to 2029.

Will DDR6 work in my motherboard?
No. It needs new platforms built for it.

Will DDR6 be cheaper than DDR5?
New memory generations usually start at a premium.
